The American Silver Eagle was authorized by the Liberty Coin Act of 1985, signed into law by President Ronald Reagan, creating the official silver bullion coin of the United States. Since its introduction, the series has combined historic American coin artistry with modern bullion standards.
 
The pairing of Weinman’s Walking Liberty obverse and Mercanti’s heraldic eagle reverse has become one of the most recognizable designs in global bullion coinage.
 
Obverse
 
The obverse features Adolph A. Weinman’s classic Walking Liberty design, depicting Lady Liberty striding toward the rising sun draped in the American flag. She carries laurel and oak branches, symbolizing civil and military honor, while the rising sun represents hope and renewal.
 
Reverse
 
The reverse displays John Mercanti’s heraldic eagle, inspired by the Great Seal of the United States. The eagle stands behind a shield while holding arrows and an olive branch, symbolizing strength and peace. Above the eagle appear thirteen stars, representing the original American colonies.
