Design Details

The American Silver Eagle combines historic coin artistry with modern bullion production. The series debuted in 1986 following the passage of the Liberty Coin Act of 1985, establishing the official silver bullion coin of the United States.

From its introduction through 2021, the series featured the pairing of Adolph A. Weinman’s Walking Liberty design with John Mercanti’s heraldic eagle, creating one of the most recognizable designs in modern coinage.

Obverse

The obverse features Adolph A. Weinman’s Walking Liberty design, originally created in 1916 for the Walking Liberty Half Dollar. Lady Liberty strides toward the rising sun with her right arm extended, draped in the American flag, while carrying laurel and oak branches symbolizing civil and military honor. The inscriptions “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and the year 1988 appear within the design.

Reverse

The reverse displays the heraldic eagle design created by U.S. Mint engraver John Mercanti, inspired by the Great Seal of the United States. The eagle stands behind a shield while holding arrows and an olive branch, representing strength and the desire for peace. Above the eagle are thirteen stars, symbolizing the original American colonies, along with the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “1 OZ. FINE SILVER – ONE DOLLAR.”
