The 1989 Silver Eagle Design

Lady Liberty is depicted striding confidently toward the rising sun, symbolizing hope and renewal. Draped in the American flag, Liberty embodies the nation’s ideals of progress and resilience. The word “LIBERTY” arches above the design, the year of issue appears below, and the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” is inscribed to the right of Liberty.
Silver Eagle Reverse Design
The reverse of the 1989 American Silver Eagle displays the original heraldic eagle design. While a new reverse was introduced in 2021, earlier issues such as the 1989 release retain this classic and historically significant imagery.
The eagle is shown with wings fully outstretched and its head turned to the left from the viewer’s perspective. A shield with vertical stripes rests on the eagle’s chest, symbolizing national unity and strength. Clutched in the eagle’s beak is a banner bearing the inscription “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” meaning “out of many, one,” a reference to the unity of the states.
Above the eagle are thirteen five pointed stars representing the original thirteen colonies. In its talons, the eagle holds both an olive branch and a bundle of arrows, symbolizing the nation’s commitment to peace alongside its readiness to defend itself when necessary.
Encircling the design is the inscription “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA 1 OZ. FINE SILVER ~ ONE DOLLAR,” clearly identifying the coin’s origin, purity, weight, and legal tender status.
