Design Details
The Aztec Calendar design is inspired by the famous Sun Stone, discovered in Mexico City on December 17, 1790, during renovations near the cathedral. The massive sculpture had been buried for centuries following the fall of the Aztec capital in 1521.
Today the original artifact is preserved at the National Anthropology Museum in Mexico City, where it remains one of the most significant relics of ancient Mesoamerican civilization.
Obverse
The obverse features a portrait of Cuauhtémoc, the final emperor of the Aztec Empire. He assumed leadership in 1520 during one of the most turbulent periods in Aztec history, defending the empire against Spanish conquistadors and shifting alliances among neighboring groups.
Reverse
The reverse displays the intricate Aztec Sun Stone, featuring a central disk surrounded by concentric rings of symbols representing cycles of time, celestial movements, and the Aztec solar calendar. The detailed design highlights the advanced astronomical knowledge of the Mexica civilization.
