Design Details

 

The American Silver Eagle program was established under the Liberty Coin Act of 1985, signed into law by President Ronald Reagan. Production officially began in 1986, launching what would become the most successful silver bullion coin program in the world.

 

From its introduction through 2021, the series featured the historic Walking Liberty design on the obverse paired with the heraldic eagle reverse by John Mercanti, creating one of the most iconic combinations in modern coinage.

 

Obverse

 

The obverse features Adolph A. Weinman’s Walking Liberty design, originally introduced in 1916. Liberty is depicted walking toward the rising sun while draped in the American flag, symbolizing freedom, progress, and optimism.

 

Reverse

 

The reverse displays John Mercanti’s heraldic eagle design, featuring a shielded eagle holding an olive branch and arrows. Above the eagle appear thirteen stars, representing the original American colonies.
