Located along the Wabash River in Vincennes, Indiana, the site of George Rogers Clark National Historical Park marks the historic location of Fort Sackville. Originally established as a French trading post in 1702, the fort later came under British control and was renamed in 1766. In 1779, George Rogers Clark led an extraordinary winter march to lay siege to the fort, defeating British Lieutenant Governor Henry Hamilton and reclaiming the territory for American forces. The victory proved instrumental in securing the Northwest Territory during the Revolutionary War.
Reverse
The reverse design captures frontiersmen under Clark’s command as they advance on British positions at Fort Sackville. The dramatic composition reflects the intensity and strategic brilliance of Clark’s campaign, widely regarded as one of the most remarkable military achievements of the Revolution.
Obverse
The obverse bears the enduring left-profile portrait of George Washington, created in 1932 by John Flanagan. This design, originally introduced on the Washington quarter, remains one of the longest-running motifs in U.S. coinage history.
Struck in five ounces of .999 fine silver, the 2017 George Rogers Clark ATB Silver Coin combines substantial silver content with meaningful historical commemoration. As the final 2017 release and the 40th coin in the series, it represents a significant chapter in both American history and modern U.S. bullion collecting.
