Design Details
 
The American Silver Eagle program was authorized under the Liberty Coin Act of 1985, signed into law by President Ronald Reagan. Production began the following year, launching what would become the official silver bullion coin of the United States.
 
From 1986 through mid-2021, the series featured the enduring combination of Walking Liberty on the obverse and the heraldic eagle reverse, creating one of the most iconic designs in modern coinage.
 
Obverse
 
The obverse features Adolph A. Weinman’s Walking Liberty design, originally introduced in 1916. Lady Liberty strides confidently toward the rising sun while draped in the American flag, symbolizing hope, freedom, and national renewal.
 
Reverse
 
The reverse displays John Mercanti’s heraldic eagle design, inspired by the Great Seal of the United States. The eagle stands behind a shield while holding arrows and an olive branch, with thirteen stars above the eagle arranged in a triangular pattern representing the original American colonies.
