Obverse
The obverse showcases Weinman’s timeless Walking Liberty motif, first introduced in 1916. Lady Liberty strides confidently toward the rising sun, draped in the American flag, symbolizing hope and renewal. The design has long been regarded as one of the most beautiful ever featured on United States coinage.
Reverse
The reverse, designed by John Mercanti, presents a heraldic eagle behind a shield, clutching arrows and an olive branch in its talons—imagery derived from the Great Seal of the United States. Above the eagle are 13 stars arranged in a triangular pattern, honoring the original colonies.
History of the American Silver Eagle Program
The origins of the American Silver Eagle trace back to the early 1980s, when the U.S. government sought to reduce excess silver reserves held in the National Defense Stockpile. Legislative action ultimately led to the passage of the Liberty Coin Act in 1985, signed into law by President Ronald Reagan. The act authorized the creation of a silver bullion coin program, with the first American Silver Eagles released on November 24, 1986.
Since its debut, the series has grown into one of the most widely recognized and actively traded bullion coins in the world. Its combination of government backing, consistent silver content, and iconic design has made it a preferred choice for both collectors and precious metals investors.
The Classic Design (1986–2021)
From 1986 through mid-2021, the American Silver Eagle featured Weinman’s Walking Liberty on the obverse and Mercanti’s heraldic eagle on the reverse. This enduring design pairing became synonymous with American silver bullion and solidified the coin’s place as a flagship product of the United States Mint.
With its established history, strong liquidity, and universally recognized imagery, the 2017 American Silver Eagle continues the legacy of one of the most trusted silver bullion programs in the global market.
