Item Description

The 2021-P Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site 5 oz Burnished Silver Coin marks both the first release of 2021 and the final coin in the 56-coin America the Beautiful (ATB) 5 oz Silver Series from the United States Mint. This historic issue concludes one of the most significant modern U.S. silver coin programs while honoring the legacy of the Tuskegee Airmen, the pioneering African American military aviators who served with distinction during World War II.

Unlike the Brilliant Uncirculated bullion versions produced primarily for investors, the Burnished collector edition was individually prepared using specially treated silver planchets and struck with carefully prepared dies. Each coin is handled with greater care during production and presentation, making these editions particularly appealing to collectors.

Struck from 5 troy ounces of .999 fine silver, the coin carries a $0.25 face value and features the ā€œPā€ mint mark of the Philadelphia Mint. It is presented in official U.S. Mint packaging, including a protective capsule and Certificate of Authenticity.

Design Details

The Burnished ATB coins feature a distinctive matte-like satin finish created by polishing the silver blanks before striking. Each coin is struck once with specially prepared dies, then carefully handled and encapsulated to preserve the finish.

This specialized minting process results in a refined surface appearance that differs from the standard Brilliant Uncirculated bullion issues, adding additional collector appeal to the coin.

Obverse

The obverse features the familiar left-facing portrait of George Washington, originally designed by John Flanagan for the 1932 Washington quarter. This enduring design appears across the entire America the Beautiful series and provides continuity throughout the program.

Reverse

The reverse honors the Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site in Alabama. The design shows a Tuskegee Airman preparing for a training flight at Moton Field, fastening his flight cap beneath his chin. In the background, the control tower stands prominently while two P-51 Mustang aircraft fly overhead, symbolizing the courage, skill, and legacy of the trailblazing aviators who trained there during World War II.
