The 2021 HMS Bounty 1 oz Silver Coin issued for the Cook Islands commemorates one of the most legendary ships in maritime history. Struck from 1 troy ounce of .9999 fine silver in Brilliant Uncirculated condition, this sovereign bullion release honors the famous HMS Bounty, the British naval vessel forever linked to the historic Mutiny on the Bounty of 1789.

On April 28, 1789, members of the HMS Bounty crew led by Lieutenant Fletcher Christian mutinied against their commanding officer, Captain William Bligh. Bligh and eighteen loyal sailors were forced into a small open boat and cast adrift in the Pacific Ocean. In one of the most remarkable feats of navigation in maritime history, Bligh successfully guided the small vessel over 3,500 nautical miles to safety.

The mutineers eventually settled in Tahiti and Pitcairn Island, where their descendants established a remote community that still exists today. The story of the Bounty and its mutiny has become one of the most famous maritime legends ever recorded, inspiring numerous books, films, and historical studies.

With its historic subject matter and high purity silver content, the 2021 HMS Bounty Silver Coin offers both collectible appeal and investment-grade bullion value.

Design Details

The HMS Bounty was originally launched in 1784 and later purchased by the British Royal Navy for a botanical expedition. The vessel’s mission was to transport breadfruit plants from Tahiti to the Caribbean, where they were intended to provide an inexpensive food source for plantation workers.

During the voyage, tensions between Captain William Bligh and members of the crew eventually escalated into the historic mutiny of April 1789. The ship’s seizure by Fletcher Christian and his supporters remains one of the most famous acts of rebellion in naval history.

Following the mutiny, the remaining crew members sought refuge in remote parts of the Pacific, most notably Pitcairn Island, where the descendants of the mutineers still live today. The legacy of the HMS Bounty continues to capture global fascination more than two centuries later.

Obverse

The obverse displays a detailed depiction of the HMS Bounty sailing vessel, shown moving across the ocean with sails fully deployed. The intricate rendering of the ship’s rigging, masts, and hull highlights the elegance and craftsmanship of historic sailing vessels.

Beneath the ship appear inscriptions noting the coin’s weight, purity, and denomination, confirming the coin’s bullion specifications and sovereign legal tender status.

Reverse

The reverse features the portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Ian Rank-Broadley. This widely recognized likeness has appeared on numerous modern Commonwealth coins and honors the long reign of the British monarch.

Surrounding inscriptions identify the Queen and confirm the coin’s legal tender denomination, reinforcing its official status as a sovereign issue associated with the Cook Islands.
