Myth and Legend
The werewolf holds a prominent place in Quebec folklore, with tales dating back to the era of New France. Known locally as the loup-garou, the creature was said to roam under the full moon, punishing those who broke religious or social codes. One of the most famous historical references appeared in a 1767 issue of the Gazette de Québec, warning citizens of a werewolf rumored to be disguised as a beggar. Feared, whispered about, and endlessly retold, the legend now finds permanent form in pure silver.
Design and Craftsmanship
Designed by Canadian artist Gerald Gloade, the reverse departs from the Royal Canadian Mint’s traditional wildlife themes and instead embraces folklore-driven imagination. The result is a dramatic, cinematic scene that captures the raw menace of the mythical beast.
Obverse Design
The obverse features the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, created by Susanna Blunt. The portrait is encircled by the inscriptions “ELIZABETH II,” “D.G. REGINA,” and the face value of “10 DOLLARS,” reflecting Canada’s constitutional monarchy and Commonwealth heritage. Despite persistent rumors to the contrary, Queen Elizabeth II is not believed to have been a werewolf.
Reverse Design
The reverse showcases a commanding depiction of the werewolf (loup-garou) in a shadowed forest beneath a full moon. Muscular, mid-motion, and intensely detailed, the creature appears moments away from attack. Fine texturing in the fur, powerful anatomy, and piercing eyes create a strong sense of movement and tension, while the layered forest background adds depth and atmosphere.
Integrated into the design are the Royal Canadian Mint’s advanced security features, including a micro-engraved maple leaf laser mark and precision radial lines extending around the field of the coin. These elements enhance both the visual complexity and authenticity of this exceptional bullion release.
