Historical Background
The original British Trade Dollar emerged during a pivotal era in global commerce following the Opium Wars of 1839–1842 and 1856–1860. After these conflicts, China was compelled to open its ports to British trade, leading to a surge in international commercial activity. To support this expanding trade network, Britain issued official trade dollars between 1895 and 1935, establishing a recognizable silver standard used across global markets.
Design Details
The obverse of the 2022 Proof British Trade Dollar features a right-facing portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, created by Royal Mint engraver Jody Clark in 2015. The effigy shows the Queen wearing the Coronation Necklace and the George IV State Diadem, with hallmarks arranged around the perimeter.
On the reverse, Britannia is presented in a refined three-quarter profile rather than the traditional full-length depiction. She is shown holding her trident alongside a globe adorned with a decorative map of the United Kingdom. The inscription “Trade Dollar” appears along the upper left, while the East India Company initials are positioned at the lower right, completing a design that blends historical symbolism with modern artistry.
