Hera and the Peacock
Hera, sister and wife of Zeus, was revered in ancient Greek mythology as the goddess of lawful marriage, family, and childbirth, as well as the protector of women and children. Worshipped throughout Greece, major temples were dedicated to her in regions such as Argos and Samos. Despite her regal beauty, Hera was equally known for her fierce and vengeful nature, largely provoked by Zeus’s many infidelities.
 
Known as Juno in Roman mythology, Hera is closely associated with the cuckoo and the peacock. Artistic depictions since the Renaissance frequently portray her riding a chariot drawn by peacocks, reinforcing this enduring symbolism. According to Ovid, Hera punished Zeus’s lover Io by transforming her into a cow and placing her under the watch of Argus, a giant with one hundred eyes. After Hermes slew Argus at Zeus’s command, Hera preserved his eyes by placing them on the peacock’s tail, forever linking the bird to her legend.
