In Greek mythology, Hera was the sister and wife of Zeus and served as the queen of the Olympian gods. Known as a protector of women, marriage, and childbirth, Hera was worshipped throughout the ancient Greek world with major temples dedicated to her in cities such as Argos and Samos. Despite her regal beauty and status, mythology often portrays her as fierce and formidable, particularly when confronting Zeus’s many affairs.
The peacock has long been associated with Hera and remains one of her most recognizable symbols. According to the Roman poet Ovid, the many eyes found on a peacock’s tail were placed there by Hera after the death of Argus, the hundred-eyed giant she appointed to guard Zeus’s lover Io.
