Scylla was a fearsome sea monster said to dwell among the jagged rocks of a narrow strait, positioned opposite the deadly whirlpool of Charybdis. Sailors who ventured too close to her lair faced devastating consequences, as Scylla would snatch six crewmen from passing ships with her swift, ravenous heads.
In Homer’s accounts, Scylla is described as a grotesque creature with twelve dangling legs, six elongated necks, and terrifying heads, each lined with three rows of razor-sharp teeth. Her voice was said to resemble the yelping of dogs, adding to her nightmarish presence. Scholars suggest her imagery may stem from the linguistic roots of her name, drawing from Greek terms associated with hermit crabs (skyllaros), dogs or dog-sharks (skylax), and the act “to rend” (skyllô). In classical art, Scylla was often portrayed as a fish-tailed sea goddess, encircled at the waist by snarling canine forms.
