Design Details

The epic poem Beowulf is one of the earliest surviving works of English literature, believed to have been composed between the 8th and 11th centuries. The story chronicles the heroic deeds of Beowulf, a warrior whose strength and courage lead him to battle monstrous adversaries threatening the kingdom of King Hrothgar.

Following Beowulf’s victory over the monster Grendel, the creature’s mother rises from her hidden lair to seek vengeance. The hero pursues her beneath the waters of a mysterious lake, where an epic struggle unfolds. Ultimately, Beowulf triumphs by wielding a massive ancient sword capable of defeating the powerful adversary.

The Royal Mint captures this legendary confrontation through intricate engraving and dramatic composition, transforming the ancient tale into a striking modern bullion design.

Obverse

The obverse features the official effigy of King Charles III, confirming the coin’s status as legal tender in Great Britain. The portrait shows the monarch in left-profile relief without a crown, following the traditional design used for male monarchs on British coinage.

Surrounding inscriptions include the King’s name, the year of issue, and the coin’s face value, completing the sovereign presentation.

Reverse

The reverse showcases the dramatic confrontation between Beowulf and Grendel’s Mother, bringing the legendary battle to life through detailed engraving and dynamic composition. The monstrous creature is depicted locked in combat with the heroic warrior, capturing the intensity of the mythological struggle.

The design emphasizes movement and tension, reflecting the climactic moment from the epic poem while highlighting the Royal Mint’s precision engraving and artistic craftsmanship.
