Design & Symbolism:
King Henry II (reigned 1154–1189) helped establish the lion as a lasting emblem of English royalty—partly influenced by his marriage to Eleanor of Aquitaine. Within British heraldry, the lion represents courage, power, nobility, and sovereign authority. When shown rampant (rearing upright), it conveys ferocious bravery and combat readiness; when depicted passant (walking with one paw raised), it expresses dignity and calm strength.
About the 2025 Issue:
Each 2025 5 oz British Silver “The British Lion” Coin arrives in Brilliant Uncirculated condition and sealed in an individual capsule. The reverse introduces a new security feature—a surface-animated Union Flag background that shifts under light.
The obverse presents King Charles III in left-profile relief, without a crown, following his official 2022 portrait by Martin Jennings—the first to appear on UK coinage of His Majesty.
The reverse, designed by David Lawrence, depicts a commanding lion seated in left-profile, mouth open mid-roar, with its right forepaw resting proudly on a shield—a timeless image of strength and guardianship for Britain’s newest numismatic icon.
