Osiris
According to ancient Egyptian mythology, Osiris was betrayed and murdered by his brother Set, who dismembered his body and cast the pieces into a river. Osiris’s wife, Isis, recovered the remains and reassembled them. Through a sacred ritual, she restored Osiris to life long enough to conceive their son, Horus.
Because of this origin story, Osiris came to symbolize resurrection and the afterlife in later Egyptian dynasties. Pharaohs were mummified and preserved with the belief that they would join Osiris in the next world, reinforcing his role as ruler of the underworld and guardian of eternal life.
