Item Description
The Public Enemy #1 – Alphonse Capone 2 oz Silver Round pays tribute to one of the most infamous figures in American criminal history. Struck in 2 troy ounces of .999 fine silver and produced with a dramatic high-relief strike, this round captures the larger-than-life presence of Alphonse “Al” Capone, the Chicago mob boss whose name became synonymous with organized crime during the Prohibition era.
The design portrays Capone in his classic public image—dressed in a sharp pinstripe suit and fedora, confidently smoking a cigar while wearing the unmistakable smirk that helped cement his legend. This iconic representation reflects the persona Capone carefully cultivated in the media during the late 1920s, when he rose to national notoriety as the dominant force behind Chicago’s criminal underworld.
Born in Brooklyn in 1899 to Italian immigrant parents, Capone left school at age fourteen and soon became involved with organized crime through gangster Johnny Torrio. After relocating to Chicago, Capone rose rapidly within Torrio’s criminal empire before ultimately taking control of the organization in 1925. Under his leadership, the Chicago Outfit expanded its bootlegging operations and wielded enormous influence during Prohibition.
Capone’s reign reached its peak in 1929, the same year he orchestrated the infamous St. Valentine’s Day Massacre against rival gangster Bugs Moran’s organization. By 1930, the Chicago Crime Commission officially labeled him “Public Enemy #1,” cementing his place in American history as the country’s most notorious gangster.
Despite years of violent criminal activity, Capone was ultimately convicted not for murder or bootlegging, but for tax evasion. In 1931 he was sentenced to eleven years in federal prison and later transferred to Alcatraz, where deteriorating health shortened his incarceration. Following his release, he spent the remainder of his life in Florida before passing away in 1947.
This high-relief silver round captures the mythology and cultural legacy of Capone, whose image helped define the stereotypical American mob boss—pinstriped suit, tilted fedora, and cigar in hand. Today, his likeness remains a lasting symbol of the Prohibition era and the rise of organized crime in early twentieth-century America.
