The Iconic Morgan Dollar Reimagined as a Five-Ounce Copper Bullion Round
When early travelers approached the mountains surrounding Virginia City, Nevada in the 1850s, they described hillsides that gleamed in the sunlight like polished glass. The cause was soon discovered—vast quantities of silver ore embedded in the mountainsides, reflecting light like countless tiny mirrors. This extraordinary find became known as the Comstock Lode, the richest silver deposit ever discovered.
One of the World’s Most Celebrated Coin Designs
The abundance of silver led the United States government to authorize the striking of a new silver dollar. Designed by U.S. Mint Assistant Engraver George T. Morgan, the coin featured a classical portrait of Lady Liberty on the obverse and a powerful eagle with outstretched wings on the reverse. Widely used throughout the American West—where hard money was often favored over paper currency—the Morgan Silver Dollar was struck from 1878 through 1904, with a final issue in 1921.
Today, the Morgan Dollar stands as one of the most recognizable and widely collected coin designs in the world. This five-ounce copper bullion round captures that timeless imagery in a bold, oversized format, offering collectors and enthusiasts an affordable way to appreciate one of America’s most enduring numismatic designs in a substantial, visually striking form.
