The Knights of Malta originally formed in present-day Italy as a relief group for pilgrims traveling to the Holy Land. When the Crusades established the Kingdom of Jerusalem, the Knights then became engaged in religious military conflicts. Later, they settled in Malta until they were driven out in 1798 by Napoleon I. Today, the organization is based in Rome, where it strives to maintain a tradition of chivalry and nobility.
