Historical Significance

The obverse honors Cuauhtémoc, a revered figure in Mexican history and the last Aztec emperor to resist the Spanish conquest. Remembered for his resilience and leadership, Cuauhtémoc remains widely commemorated through monuments, artwork, and coinage throughout Mexico. His name translates to “one who descends like an eagle,” a reference to the decisive and forceful nature of an eagle in flight—traits that reflect his determined rule and unwavering resistance.

The reverse design depicts the Aztec Calendar, an advanced and symbolic system used to track time in cycles unlike the modern calendar. Rather than months and numbered days, it identifies periods through symbolic elements such as animals, natural forces, and governing deities. Beyond marking time, the calendar was believed to indicate the nature or character of each day, similar in concept to a horoscope. Its circular form makes it a natural and visually striking choice for a coin design.
