Design Details
 
The Libertad series blends Mexican history, mythology, and national symbolism through a timeless coin design. The central image of Winged Victory (El Ángel de la Independencia) represents freedom and independence and is inspired by the famous monument located in Mexico City.
 
Behind the statue stand the towering volcanoes Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl, which are tied to a legendary Aztec love story in which two lovers were transformed into mountains so they could remain together for eternity. This blend of mythology and national identity has helped establish the Libertad as one of the most distinctive designs in modern bullion coinage.
 
Obverse
 
The obverse displays Mexico’s national coat of arms, featuring an eagle perched on a cactus while devouring a serpent. Surrounding the central emblem are historic versions of Mexico’s coat of arms, representing different eras of the nation’s history, along with the inscription “Estados Unidos Mexicanos.”
