The obverse presents Mexico’s modern coat of arms—an eagle perched atop a cactus devouring a serpent—surrounded by historical renditions of the national emblem used throughout the country’s past. This layered design reflects Mexico’s evolving identity and enduring sovereignty.
On the reverse, the celebrated Winged Victory statue stands prominently in the foreground. Modeled after the monument that crowns Mexico City’s Independence Column, the figure symbolizes freedom and national pride. Rising in the distance are the legendary volcanoes Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl, whose presence references one of Mexico’s most enduring love stories from Aztec lore.
Mexican Silver Libertads
The 5 oz Silver Libertad in Brilliant Uncirculated condition debuted in 1996 and has been issued annually since its introduction. These larger-format coins are struck in significantly lower numbers than the 1 oz Libertads, enhancing their desirability among collectors seeking a more substantial silver presentation.
Each piece is produced by La Casa de Moneda de México, the oldest mint in North America, originally established in 1535. As Mexico’s official mint, it manufactures both circulating currency and precious metal coinage under the authority of Banco de México.
The reverse imagery of Winged Victory and the twin volcanoes also draws from the legend of Princess Iztaccíhuatl and the warrior Popocatépetl—two lovers said to have been transformed into mountains by the gods so they could remain together eternally. This fusion of history, myth, and national symbolism has helped cement the Libertad series as one of the most recognizable and sought-after silver bullion programs in the world.
With its substantial 5 oz weight, historic symbolism, and limited production figures, the 2022 5 oz Silver Mexican Libertad remains a standout acquisition for collectors and silver enthusiasts alike.
