Captured in 1430 and turned over to English authorities, Joan was tried on charges of heresy and witchcraft and executed by burning at the stake in 1431. Nearly five centuries later, she was canonized as a saint by the Catholic Church in 1920. Today, Joan of Arc remains an enduring symbol of courage, conviction, and national pride in France.
